Privacy Policy
This site is a reading publication, and it is built to collect as little about you as possible. This page explains, in plain language, what is collected, why, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
You do not need an account to read anything here, and we do not ask you to register, log in or hand over personal details in order to browse. In practice that leaves three narrow cases: technical data recorded automatically by the web server, anything you choose to send us by email, and — where used — aggregate audience statistics.
Server logs
Like nearly every website, ours records standard technical information when a page is requested: the IP address, the time of the request, the page requested, the referring page and basic browser and device details. This is used to keep the site running, diagnose faults and detect abuse or attacks. These logs are kept for a limited period and then deleted.
Cookies
The site does not use cookies to profile you or to build an advertising identity. Any cookie set is functional — remembering a display preference, for example. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time; the site remains readable if you do.
Analytics
Where audience measurement is used, it is used in aggregate: how many people read a piece, which pages are popular, roughly which countries readers come from. We are interested in whether an essay was useful, not in who you are. We do not sell data and we do not run behavioural advertising networks on this site.
If you write to info@themselves.in, your address and the content of your message are stored in our mailbox so that we can reply and keep track of the conversation. We do not add correspondents to any mailing list without a clear, separate request, and we never pass an address to a third party. Ask us to delete your correspondence and we will.
Third parties
Some resources on the site — fonts, icons, embedded media — may be delivered by external providers, and your browser contacts them directly to fetch those files. Those requests are subject to the providers' own privacy policies. Links to other websites are likewise outside our control; once you follow one, that site's policy governs what happens to your data.
Children
The site is written for adults and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the age of sixteen.
Security
The site is served over an encrypted connection and access to the systems behind it is restricted. No system on the internet is perfectly secure, but because we hold so little about our readers, there is very little here for anyone to take.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, or to object to its processing. Write to us and we will act on such a request as quickly as we reasonably can.
Changes to this policy
If the way the site handles data changes, this page is updated first. Please check back occasionally if the subject matters to you.
